TFTF #5- Hyperloop

Elon Musk is awesome.  From Paypal to Tesla to SpaceX, the man has a knack for bringing something completely blasphemous to the table, and bringing it to life. His brain child, Hyperloopfollows suit.

The reason we are covering Hyperloop now is its possible implementation in India. More on that later.

What is Hyperloop?

Hyperloop is a proposed method of alternative transport which offers you the speed of an aircraft(about 1100km/hr on ground. The designers claim that once implemented, Hyperloop will cost about as much as a bus ticket, will be hassle free, and on demand. (Sounds too good to be true, right?)

How will it work?

The idea sounds simple. Take 2 points A and B. First, we need to construct a tunnel between the 2 points. The tunnel must be robust and should have partial vacuum. Then Pods will run in these tunnels, carrying passengers around. These pods will be accelerated by magnetic accelerators placed along the length of the tube, and will float on a cushion of air, thus achieving minimum turbulence, and friction, allowing it to go faster.

Will it work?

There is no definite answer. The idea seems solid, and research and prototyping is going fast. The company has managed to come too far too soon. This is to be taken as a good sign, as efforts seem to be in the right direction. So mostly, it will work. But don't expect to be travelling in pods for the next 3-4 years at least.

Is Hyperloop coming to India?

Rob Lloyd

Based on Elon Musk's original vision, a company called Hyperloop One has been set up. The company is eager to start, and India is one of the favored locations. In an event at Delhi, attended by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu and Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant, Rob Lloyb, CEO and Board Member of Hyperloop One unveiled the proposed routes, which include: Delhi-Mumbai, Mumbai-Chennai, Bengaluru-Chennai, Bengaluru-Trivandrum, and Mumbai-Kolkata. The selected route could be functional by 2021.

If India chooses to accept the proposal, we could be the first country to have the next generation means of transport. An investment in Hyperloop would be an investment in the most important resource of all, time. But, it could also mean being a Guinea Pig to an untested and potentially dangerous technology.
