Nokia 6- First Impressions

Nokia is trying to re-enter the market and this time by accepting Android in its latest launch- The Nokia 6. It has been launched only in China on 8th of January for 1675 yuan(which is roughly INR 16,750). Here’s what you should know about this device.

Appearance:

1. 154 x 75.8 x 7.85 mm (8.4 mm with the camera bump)

2. Aluminium body

3. Black colour (There is speculation of  a silver variant also)

4. 2.5D Gorilla Glass

It comes with a 5.5 inch screen with a sleek design, a front fingerprint sensor and features a micro-USB port. Nokia has opted for the conventional micro-USB instead of the newer C-type port and stayed on with the 3.5 mm jack. Here, they play traditional.

Display:

Resolution: 403ppi

With a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels, it has IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen. Again, Nokia lags compared to the other smartphones with AMOLED and SUPER-AMOLED displays which are better on battery and have a larger colour variance. Also a pixel density of 403ppi is comparatively less for its price range.

Processor:

Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 1.1Ghz Octa-core processor

Nokia has chosen to go for the Snapdragon 430 processor which is also found in other budget offerings like the Redmi 3S Prime and the Lenovo K6 Note which are in the lower price bracket. A Snapdragon 430 octa-core is efficient on the battery but with the clock speed of 1.1 GHz, you may find some lag while multi-tasking or during heavy usage.

Software:

Android: Android 7.0 Nougat

Nokia 6 comes with the latest Android by Google. With many manufacturers yet to provide the Nougat updates to their customers Nokia gains an advantage here. Also, the Nokia 6 comes with its own  Z launcher which enables you to find apps, contacts with just a scribble and many more nifty features under its sleeve.

Battery:

Battery: 3000mAh Li-ion battery

Nokia is known for its batteries but this one may seem lesser in capacity compared to other phones at the price point. But one thing to be noted is that the processor Snapdragon 430 is highly battery efficient. So a 3000 mAh battery is not as small as it seems. Nokia has chosen to stay(yet again) with the conventional Li-ion battery while other manufacturers are moving towards the newer Li-polymer battery. (We will soon be covering more on the Li-polymer and Li-ion batteries soon so stay tuned for that.)

Update: Li-Po VS Li-Ion battery Comparison

Memory:

Internal: 64 GB

Expandable upto 128 GB

RAM: 4 GB

A 64 GB internal memory is something one should be looking for. With only few manufacturers giving a 64 GB, internal Nokia takes a plus point here. Also a 4GB RAM gives you faster access to your applications. There will be some speed issues while accessing this huge internal memory with the middle-end chipse that Nokia offers.

Sound:

Nokia 6 comes with dual speakers with a Dolby Atmos sound enhancement. This would ensure a very good sound quality. Also it has active noise cancellation with a dedicated microphone. Nokia has left no stones unturned with its sound system.

Camera:

16 MP back camera and 8 MP front.

Nokia 6 is packed with a pretty decent 16 MP back camera with dual LED flash. It comes with a medium f/2.0 aperture and has autofocus, phase detection, geotagging , touch focus, panaroma, HDR.

One can record a video at 1080p@30fps.

Commenting on camera it appears that Nokia 6 is capable of giving sharp focus, albeit in outdoor light. The pictures seem to be more natural then retouched or edited.

Connectivity:

Most of the connectivity offerings are pretty standard, with WiFi 802.11, Bluetooth 4.1, and dual sim slots, both being 4G Enabled. Though the chipsets supports NFC Nokia hasn’t included this advanced technology in Nokia 6. Also there is no infrared.

Final Verdict:

Nokia 6 has proved its worth in its memory and sound quality where it promises to deliver, but may lag behind others in its chipset and NFC, infrared. So overall this seems to be a good buy in its price range rather than best. Purchasing this would require a tinge of sentimental blindness towards the Finnish Company.
