The Jio Effect: Airtel Revises its prepaid plans to offer yet more data
It has not been very long since Reliance Jio entered the telecom market. But in the time of its existence, it has completely transformed the sector.
After supplying Free 4G data to millions of people for more than a year, it finally stopped not because it couldn't go on, but only because TRAI(Telecom Regulation Authority of India) finally stepped in and made them do so.
Even now, when you look at the tariffs, and compare them to the industry standards before Jio entered the market, you would be blown away.
Consider this: Before Jio entered the market, this was my plan:
At Rs. 299 (plus taxes because, why not), I got 90 minutes Local Calls, 40 Minutes STD, 300 Messages and 630 MB 3G/4G Data for a month.
Enter Jio, which terrorizes Airtel into slashing its rates by almost 80 percent.
Today, nobody even counts calls(they are ubiquitously unlimited), and nobody can do without atleast 1GB 4G Data in a day.
This is what RJio's current prepaid plans look like:
This tells us a few things. First, the data wars are far from over. People thought they were, but if Airtel, even after taking decrease in profits is willing to go on, it sure is going to extend further.
Next, while Jio might have played an essential role in bringing operators back to the ground, it may have overdone it. If Reliance continues to utilize its capital earned elsewhere, and the other players get cold feet, the market would soon become monopolistic, which surely isn't good. Increasingly so, as RJio did their first price hike recently.
What I am saying is, whatever happens, people should still have options to choose from.

Massive, right? That is what Reliance industries brought to the table.
Naturally, every other player, Airtel included couldn't go on with their original prices. So the same Airtel, which made me go about at 630 MB for a month, after the recent update in their plans, has this to offer:
