The Fall and Ryze of AMD ft. Intel

AMD has been out of the Processor race for long. Being the only serious competitor Intel ever had in the processor market, this suited the latter well, and today Intel has reached a stage where you hardly see any Desktop or Laptop not opting for it. But just when the market had started to sign off Advanced Micro Devices(AMD), enter Ryzen.

The first thing about Ryzen is that it is fresh, something not really expected of AMD. The family has 3 processors:

Product Name Model Base Clocking (GHz) Overclock Cap (GHz) TDP (Watts) Price In India
 Ryzen 7 1800X         3.6           4       95       40600
 Ryzen 7 1700X         3.4          3.8       95      31300
 Ryzen 7 1700          3          3.7       65      26000

All of them are octa core processors, which is a competitive step, considering that majority of Intel's processors are quad core, and the octa core one's are priced off the charts. AMD challenges Intel by offering virtually the same thing at a fraction of the price. All the chips have 14nm architecture, the same which the 7th Gen Intel chips offer. It uses the Zen platform, something which AMD has been teasing since last year. This leads to an important question. Did Intel spike up the prices because no one was their to question their dominance. If yes, then that's about to change.

According to benchmarking tests done by Tom's Hardware, the processors performed extremely well in terms of raw processing power, and the 1800X beats the Intel 6900K in that segment, a monster priced at almost a lakh. It handles big data and rendering like a pro.

The most noticeable segment where it failed is gaming(you can read the full report at Techspot).
The 1800X was not even able to match upto Intel Processors priced lower that this. The most probable reason to this is that most Games, along with some other applicabilities are actually optimized keeping Intel processors in mind, as it is the major player. That explains why the Ryzen fares well in the other segments and fails so badly here. If this is indeed the case, then this will soon change if the Ryzen gains popularity and is still kept in mind by developers while optimizing their applications.

All in all, Ryzen 7 looks like the first serious attempt  by AMD in a long time, and if nothing, it will at-least shake Intel out of its cozy slumber. It is the disruptor the market needed.
