Opera Neon- A preview of what browsers can become.
All companies have a way to showcase their future, through concepts that are bold, at the same time, intended to change the way we do things. Opera does the same with its so-called "concept browser" Neon. Internet has evolved a lot since its inception but browsers haven't seen much of a change in the same phase. Neon wants to change that. Let us find out what Opera has in store for us.
Opera brings a fresh feel to the overall design by blending in your desktop wallpaper for the browser. It actually feels like a desktop rather than a web browser. It features floating bubbles of popular sites which Opera thinks you might like ( probably a sort of advertisement). It has done away with the traditional tabs which are obviously annoying as the numbers increase. They appear as the right side-bar as circular bubbles featuring a small favicon of the respective website opened. It also shows any incoming notifications with the bubble. It has still kept the URL address bar floating just above the default circular bubbles. The coolest feature that Opera has experimented is the default split-screen tab feature. You can hover a bubble on the top of an existing open tab and it offers you an option to either keep it to the left or right. The left-nav bar is particularly different from what we have seen in any traditional browsers. It features 5 tabs:
1.Add : A normal tab is added.
2.Player: We have often found ourselves stuck between audio and video tracks while playing multiple tracks online. Player tab shows all the open tracks along with the favicon of the site which can be played and paused right there making it quite easy.
3.Snap: This tab helps you take snapshots of the browser and essentially store them.
4.Gallery: Gallery helps to keep track of all the snapshots taken.
5.Downloads: It keeps track of all the downloads.
The lower left tab at the bottom also has some tools like the Task Manager( for the browser itself..cool ), New window, Incognito window ,etc.
The Verdict: The Neon is just an out-of-the-box prototype with a bunch of cool stuff incorporated in it. The Split-Screen feature and the Player are the things worth trying out in this browser. It still is not a complete browser and lacks important features like Browser Extensions or Discover. Since it's just a "concept browser", it's not going to replace the main Opera browser. Some of the features will definitely be incorporated into the mainstream browser. Neon, definitely is a preview of "the way it could be" for Opera or any future browsers and in our opinion, is the first serious rethought that the mainstream web browser market has received in the past 10 years or so.
