WhatsApp to introduce UPI-integrated payments in India

WhatsApp maybe planning a foray into person-to-person digital payments in its largest market, India which has over 200 million users of its billion user base.

An advertisement to hire a candidate with a technical background and understands UPI and India's BHIM app clearly indicates that it will follow the footsteps of WeChat which did the same some time back with WeChat pay app. Facebook's own Messenger app did the same in US but the fact that WhatsApp is more popular in India doing it through WhatsApp would be a smarter move.

A WhatsApp spokesperson cited that WhatsApp would like to contribute as much as possible to Digital India to boost Internet-based services in India. We expect a flagship project to launch in around six months.

WhatsApp is one of the most popular apps in India and with Digital India, being promoted to a great extent after the famous demonetisation move, it could be a big chance for further expansion if WhatsApp is able to deliver. WhatsApp is a platform to connect. Only this time, it's economic interests would be the centre stage.
