How to get more storage on your laptop by replacing the CD Drive

Storage is never enough. I repeat, never. On our laptops, we always crib about how we are running out on space, or how the HDD is slow. Thankfully, there is a workaround, provided you have have a CD Drive in there.

With the deprecating use of optical drives, it makes little sense to have one on board, especially when there is the prospective of replacing it with something that gives you more storage. Yes, it is possible to remove your optical disk reader and change it with a HDD or SSD storage.

Warning: The process is different for all laptops and can be slightly risky, so do consult an expert, or at least be careful. Capesaber takes no responsibility for any loss on your side. However, if you get stuck anywhere, we will try to help you in the best possible way.

Step 1: Identify the type of CD drive you have. The height of the drive can be 9.5 mm or 12.5 mm.

Step 2: Remove the drive. In most laptops, it is a simple matter of removing a few screws, but again, you need to find out how it is done for your particular laptop.

Step 3: Now that your space is cleared, you'll see a SATA cable, to which a 2.5'' HDD or SSD can be attached. However, you cannot have it dangling outside, can you? To keep the Drive in place and safe, you will require something called a Hard Disk Caddy. You will need to select the caddy required for your specific laptop. (You can find a range of caddies here).

Step 4: If step 3 worked correctly, you are done more or less. The newly inserted drive should show up on your PC. You can now use this.

Enjoy your new found storage. Did this method work for you? Do you intend to try it? Let us know in the comments below.
