What is VoLTE?
Reliance Jio has found considerable success, courtesy, it's 4G-VoLTE only network and Airtel will soon join the bandwagon. There is a lot of confusion about VoLTE, LTE and 4G and most of it mislead people into believing that 4G is the same as 2G or 3G but is just the faster of the latter two. That's just a part of the story. VoLTE for you!
VoLTE stands for Voice-over LTE. It does exactly what it says- voice-calling over a 4G-LTE network. Traditional GSM technologies were made with the intention of only voice calls and data transfer was adopted into the existing model. How models allow data and voice flow through their network is different particularly, 4G as compared to 2G or 3G.
2G or 3G is circuit-switching model while 4G is packet switching. In the former model, a certain amount of bandwidth is assigned for the call, which ends after the call ends. In the case of a VoLTE network, voice calls are broken into data packets which are transferred over the full bandwidth and reconstructed at receiver's end. The higher bandwidth allocation results in a better call quality, improved coverage and connectivity.
In today's scenario, most of the phones have 2G, 3G and 4G configured setup and they push calls through the 2G or 3G network while the data is pushed through the 4G network. LTE is the next generation transmission model but is capable of only transmitting data, therefore, VoLTE is the only way by which calls can be made over a LTE network. Note that VoLTE is a seperate feature altogether and a LTE-based phone must have VoLTE capabilities via software upgrade to use the feature.
VoLTE is the next generation technology and brings faster speed and better call quality. The only down is that it's limited now. Only a 4G-4G call will make you feel the real difference.
