Youtube Go: For the data conscious.

Youtube Go: For the data conscious.
Youtube GO
On the outset of India emerging as a market to be reckoned with, it is becoming increasingly common to see companies having India specific releases, or launches with India in focus. One such move by Youtube is Youtube Go.

Late last year, Youtube had announced that they will be rebuilding the Youtube App in such a way that users have more control over their data. This is what materialized as Youtube Go. “Ab Mazze Udao, Data nahi” is the tagline and also the core philosophy of the new app.

The app is very similar to the main app, albeit a few differentiating features. The app size is less than 10MB, which makes it easy to download. Further, you have the ability to save the video offline, and get to choose the resolution it is saved in. Another interesting add on is the ability to share these videos with nearby friends.

The app is a boon for data conscious users like me who don’t want to waste a single megabyte. The ability to preview a video before actually watching or downloading it lets you have complete control.

However, I think the app is overkill. Though it does have new features, it’s not that these features couldn’t have been implemented in the main app itself. Though the company claims that the app is lightweight and hence makes sense, the fact that Youtube comes pre-installed on every Android device means it is an extra 10 Mb you are downloading. However, it’s always good to see an India first launch.
