WhatsApp two-step verification feature |
The user has to remember the pass-code set initially whenever he re-verifies his number at WhatsApp. This is unlike the other two-step verification options which sends an app generated pass-code. So in case, the user forgets the pass-code, even he cannot re-verify his number within seven days of using WhatsApp without the pass-code after which he will lose all his pending messages upon re-verification.
If your number is reverified on WhatsApp after 30 days of last using WhatsApp, and without your passcode, your account will be deleted and a new one will be created upon successfully reverifying. To make sure that users does not lose their data, you can have an optional backup e-mail, in-case you want to disable the verification feature. WhatsApp also prompts you to periodically enter the six-digit pass-code set by you to ensure that it is remembered when required.

Enabling such a verification feature was a good move since WhatsApp was mocked of its level of its security but remembering a pass-code set initially might be difficult to remember for some. It is advisable that set a backup e-mail if you opt for the verification feature.
