Quick Tip #1 How to get on-screen navigation buttons on your Android Device?

Imagine this: Your precious phone somehow loses its capacitive buttons and you can't got to Home or go Back anymore. Or, you decide that those flashy buttons with their lights are sucking on your battery. In either case, it would be sweet to have on screen navigation buttons. While devices shipping with stock android or something close have these, may Custom OEMs like that of Samsung seem to miss this feature.
There's a workaround though, and it doesn't even need you to root your device. Behold Virtual SoftKeys.

To get on-screen nav buttons,

  • Install the Virtual SoftKeys app from the Play Store. Download here.
  • After installing the application, you need to allow two extra permissions:
  1. Draw over other apps: This should be turned on by default. If it is not, just follow the upcoming prompts to turn it on.
  2. Accessibility service: This must be turned on so that it can perform the required actions as an ordinary button. Open Settings > Accessibility > Virtual SoftKeys, then turn it on.

  • Now you are ready to go. You can adjust the settings regarding the position, size of the nav buttons as you may require from the app itself. One remarkable feature is Smart Hidden button. This hides the nav buttons when you are using the keyboard so it does not hide any button like the space bar while you are typing.
Cheers!
